Good Friday a Day of Hope and Some Bad Memories For Warren

Good Friday is an important day in the life of Christians.  It should be!  It is the day Jesus was crucified.  Why is that good?  If He had not died, He could not have arisen, and the resurrection to Christians is the reason we believe salvation is made available to the human race.  It is an important day in the history of mankind.

While Good Friday should always be remembered for the right reasons, it is a date that many in Warren will never forget for a tragic occurrence.  In 1975, 43 years ago, Warren was hit hard by a tornado on Good Friday.  In the early evening hours a tornado moved through the southern part of the city and destroyed around 50 homes, damaged several hundred and killed seven.  Over 70 people were injured.  It was a terrible event and one that those of us who lived here at the time will never forget.  It was terrifying and caused a lot of hurt and suffering.

Fortunately our beloved community rebuilt and came back strong, but the memories will always be with us.  It makes it all the more important to focus on the meaning of Good Friday.

It should be noted that on January 3, 1949, Warren was hit by another terrible storm that killed over 50.  That took place 69 years ago.  An extensive article about the 1949 tornado was run on salineriverchronicle.com on January 4, 2014.

In the years since the 1975 storm, Warren city government has added a storm warning system.  Whenever the weather threatens, be on the alert and if those sirens go off, be ready to seek shelter.  It is something to take seriously.

Enjoy Good Friday and remember what it is all about.  Also remember our history and every day be alert to bad weather and have a plan to access maximum protection for you and your family.
