CASA Seeks Volunteers

Who We Are
The Court Appointed Special Advocate CASA of the 10th Judicial District Program is a non-profit organization that advocates for abused and neglected children throughout the court process.  As trained volunteers, CASA Advocates are appointed by the Judge to advocate for the child’s best interest. The advocates speak up for their assigned child in the court and will let the Judge know what the child wants and needs.  Our goal is to help the child find a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible.

What We Do
CASA Advocates speak to all persons related to the child’s case. This may include teachers, DHS family service workers, counselors, neighbors, relatives, physicians, ministers, foster parents, or any person that would have information concerning the child.  The advocate reports his or her findings to the Judge through a court report. The report gives the court background and current information as well as concerns and recommendations to enable the Judge to make informed decisions.

Making a Difference
CASA Advocates make a real difference in the lives of abused and neglected children in our overburdened child welfare system. In one particular case that had been opened for several years, all parties were in agreement that the child should go home to the parents; everyone except the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). You see, everyone had changed in the case, the child’s attorney, the DHS Caseworker and the DHS supervisor. They had very little knowledge of the horrific history in this case because they truly did not have time to read all of the case files. As the Judge was ready to rule, the CASA asked for permission to speak. After she described the history of the case, the Judge was mortified that he almost sent the child back into this home. Thanks to the work of one volunteer CASA, this child was able to be adopted by a loving family where she could feel safe and no longer experience the cruelty of these people. One month after this case closed, this father raped a young girl. This is just one of the many stories of how CASAs help abused and neglected children in Ashley, Bradley, Chicot, Desha, and Bradley Counties.

Court Appointed Special Advocates are making a difference one child at a time.

The children with whom you will be working with are victims of child abuse and neglect. They need a “voice in the court system” in order to find a safe, permanent home quickly whatever that mean returning to a parent or being adopted. As a CASA volunteer, you will provide that voice, sharing with the court both the child’s wishes and recommendations about what is in that child’s best interest from the facts that you have gathered. It is important work that requires the commitment of your time, your energy, and your heart.

Mission Statement

The mission of CASA of the 10th Judicial District is to provide abused, neglected, and dependent children a voice in the court process. Our mission is accomplished through community awareness and support, which results in trained volunteers to advocate for the best interest of each child.
