Lack of Volunteers a Problem ( Editorial )

It appears to be happening everywhere.  Throughout Arkansas the lack of volunteers is showing up and in some cases causing  difficulties.  We are not just talking about festivals and public events, but the willingness to serve on boards and commissions and even to serve on public bodies.  It seems many of our citizens do not have the time or the desire to get involved in activities that are vital to the quality of life we enjoy and hope to maintain.

There are many needs.  Most do not cost to take part, but some do ask that help be provided in raising money.  Organizations like the Pink Tomato Festival do not just happen.  It takes people as well as money.  The many civic clubs such as Rotary, Lions, Ladies League and Junior Auxiliary as well as others have to have members willing to spend time and effort if they are to be successful and carry out projects for the community.

The Donald W. Reynolds YMCA of Warren and Bradley County is in need of volunteers to serve on the board, to coach and sponsor youth sports and to help the Y in many other ways.  Warren is fortunate to have a full time, full service Y to provide programs for our youth and adults.  It is a big business and depends on all of us to be successful.  This is especially true as it relates to developing our youth.

The City of Warren, Bradley County and the School Districts in the county have need of those willing to serve and take part in civic activities.  The City of Warren, the City of Hermitage, the City of Banks and the County of Bradley need interested citizens to serve on a number of boards and commissions that pay nothing but make decisions that affect our local economy and standard of living.  If you have an interest in a specific area, let someone with the organization know.  Chances are you can find an opportunity to serve if you desire to do so and in some cases meet the criteria as prescribed by law.

We live in a wonderful community with needs that we all have to contribute to.  Money is always an issue and an important part of the solution, but so is our personal involvement.  Get involved and do your part as you have the time and skills to do so.  Try to make time to serve!  We should do as President John F. Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."  The same can be said for our cities, county and school districts.
