Chorale society, symphony and UAM chorus to present concert of sacred music to end Seark Concert Association season
Two iconic pieces of French sacred music - Gabriel Fauré's Requiem and Francis Poulenc's Gloria - will be on the program as the Arkansas Choral Society joins the University of Arkansas at Monticello Concert Chorus and more than 30 members of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra for a concert in Monticello this Sunday.
The concert will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at the Fine Arts Center on the UAM campus.
Maria Fasciano will be the soprano soloist in both pieces. Robert Holden will be the baritone soloist in the Fauré Requiem, which will also feature the Arkansas Youth Chorale. Kent Skinner, music director of the Choral Society and conductor of choral activities at UAM, will be on the podium.
Tickets for the concert, part of the Seark Concert Association's 2016-17 season, are $20. Call (870) 460-1060, email searkconcert@uamont.edu or visit the website, www.searkconcert.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
Partial funding for the concert comes from a grant from the Arkansas Arts Council.
A requiem is a mass for the dead, part of a funeral service in the Catholic church. Faure’s composition debuted in 1888. Program notes from the concert describe Faure’s Requiem as “indeed a unique work of art… In its abiding consolation for the living and reverence for the dead, and in its beautiful harmonies and lyrical melodies, it stands as the supreme achievement of the composer’s body of sacred work, and as a singular example of the sublime in the choral art.”
Poulenc’s Gloria is described in the notes as “perhaps one of the three or four most important chorus/orchestra works of the 20th century” and premiered in 1961. Poulenc himself called it “a joyous hymn to the glory of God.”
