From time to time as one travels around the City of Warren dogs will be seen running free.  Many appear to be healthy and cared for but have either escaped their pen or have been let out of the house to run around freely.  Some are strays looking for food or just rambling around.  In talking to some dog owners, it seems that many still don't realize that it is illegal for any dog to run free within the city limits and the owner is responsible.  Naturally strays may enter the city from outside the city limits.  Regardless free roaming dogs are illegal.

The City of Warren animal control ordinance mandates several things:
1. Dogs must be confined to the private property of the owner unless on a lease and under control.
2. Dogs are to be properly cared for.  This means with food, water and shelter.  Anything less is a
violation of the law and makes the owner subject to penalty.
3. Dogs are to be vaccinated

Warren has an animal control officer who works for the police department.  He patrols the city and responds to complaints, but he needs the assistance of residents.  Report free running dogs and provide available information to the officer to help him locate violations and dog owners.  Citations can and will be issued by the Warren Police Department as necessary.

Sometimes the animal control ordinance is difficult to enforce.  Dogs are not always easy to catch.  It is the responsibility of the owner of any dog to keep it safely secured and cared for within the Warren city limits.  Animals, for their own protection do not need to be running free on city streets.  Please obey the law and take care of your dog! Report violations to the Warren Police Department at 226-3703.
